The city of silk and Alessandro Volta
Como is a provincial capital of Lombardy that lies on the border with Switzerland and stretches along the western shore of the lake. The city is surrounded by lake and mountains, which makes it so interesting from a natural point of view that it has become a source of inspiration for numerous poets and artists.
Despite being a completely urbanised city today, Como still retains an ancient charm that makes it unique and inimitable. It is a city steeped in history. In fact, the historical centre, surrounded by walls dating back to the 12th century, is full of medieval buildings with an austere and imposing air that contrast wonderfully with the neoclassical buildings in other streets of the city. One monument not to be missed is the Duomo di Como, the construction of which began in 1396 and was not completed until 1740. The marble façade represents a mixture of different styles and thus the succession of different historical eras.
If you are interested in science, don't miss the Tempio Voltiano, a Palladian-style building where the Como scientist Alessandro Volta stored all his scientific instruments. Very interesting is the Silk Museum; the city of Como is still known as the silk capital of the world and this can be seen in the many shops selling typical products in the centre.
There are two ways to visit the town in its entirety: by lake and by land. In fact, it is possible either to travel the entire lake from one shore to the other by boat to discover the surrounding villages, or to use the funicular railway that has been in operation since 1894 and that allows you to reach the village of Brunate in 7 minutes, from where you can have a panoramic view of the entire area. Another characteristic feature of the town are the many luxurious villas with their wonderful gardens that enrich the landscape.
Como's gastronomy is the typical Larian cuisine, and it is possible to experience it in the numerous restaurants overlooking the lake, thus combining the pleasures of the table with those of the view. It is a city suitable for everyone and offers services of all types and for all needs, offering landscapes of undisputed beauty and significant historical and cultural attractions.
What to see during a visit to Como: Como Cathedral, Tempio Voltiano, Villa Olmo, Basilica di S. Fedele, Basilica di Sant'Abbondio, Porta Torre, Life Electric, Palazzo del Broletto, Brunate, Como-Brunate funicular railway.
